I am trying to respond to your recent inquiry (May 31) on Ralph Maughan's blog about wolves. I could not get a comment box to show up for that post so I will try this.

2 years ago, rangers at the Madison Junior Ranger Station informed me that a couple wolves of the Hayden Pack had to be collared as a "slap on the wrist" for becoming too habituated to humans. The rangers said the wolves had been fed by tourists.

In defense of wolves, I will also add a personal encounter with a member of the Hayden Pack on that same trip and before talking to the rangers. My daughter, then 5 yrs. old, and I got out of the car at a pullout near the Mary Mountain trailhead south of Canyon Village. I looked across the road and to my surprise, a wolf was coming right across it. Definitely not a coyote. The wolf came within 10 feet of us and never even looked up at us! It made no growling or other warning signs as it came near us. It went on intent about its business of crossing the road and going up the side of the mountain like we were not even there.

I think wolves are like people, they are individuals. Just because one may act a particular way doesn't mean the rest of them will act the same under the same circumstances, even if they are habituated.

Oh, you do take fabulous photos!

Hey This is Tiffany Roundy. You left a comment on my photo blog. It was funny because I was looking through your slide show and from Andy and Megan's wedding there is a picture of my little girl when she was a baby with my grandma. That was fun for me to see. You do a good job. Thanks for the advice. I just haven't wanted to fork out the money quite yet.
